It’s really hard to remember a specific good time with John because honestly, every time I was with John it was a great time! Most times with him, other social parties, were centered around bike riding. But living together while camping out doors for a week at a time for Ragbrai offers one the opportunity to get to know teammates very well, to love them like family. Such was the case with John. We had so many fun adventures because being with John was always an adventure. Not only bike riding days but also the evenings in camp, the trips to the start of Ragbrai and the usual Friday night dinner before Ragbrai starts. Those Friday night dinners always stand out in my mind because it was the beginning of a great week that included John. I remember the very first dinner, we were all ready to head out of the restaurant when John bought a round of tequila shots. Just when we thought the evening was over he livened it up quite a bit! Another Friday night dinner before Ragbrai comes to mind when I was a little tired and ready to go back to the hotel room but John said, “NO, let’s go to the casino!” So off to the casino I went and had a great time. I learned early on that when John invites you for an adventure you go because you don’t want to miss it! Once when he had his tent right next to me I was kept awake by his snoring at night. I was teasing him about camping so close to me that I could hear him and couldn’t sleep. She told me I should have thrown my shoe at him. But he was so thoughtful that after that, the next year, he took steps to be a quieter sleeper, less of a snorer. He made a point of letting me know what he did to be more quiet. I hadn’t even remembered it from the year before but he was always very thoughtful and very conscientious and considerate of others like that. He will be so greatly missed!
